As the first clip-on earphones in the market, it comes as no surprise that people are excited for the product. The earrings are the perfect blend of utility and aesthetics. 146 percent Small but powerful Weighing only 6g the design of the earring is simple. It is a real pearl and buyers have the option in between silver or gold hardware for the clip. The goal of the product was to camouflage the listening device by embedding it in the pearl therefore the average onlooker simply sees an earring. The really unique feature of the earrings are what Nova calls an “out-of-ear technology”. Unlike traditional bluetooth earphones, the Nova’s earrings do not go inside of your ear due to the design of the product. Rather the focus is really in the technology where the sound is transported from the earring to the ear canal through “directional sound”. The wearable hearable market is still small but growing, and Apple Airpods currently account for more than . 50 percent of the hearables shipment market Brands like Bose have joined the game with the launch of their bluetooth sunglasses. Similar to the earrings, the speakers are built into the arms of the sunglasses which positions the sound to go straight into the wearer’s ears. just recently published a “Top hearables of 2021” list and all the products are earphones with Apple and Samsung being at the top. These companies along with Google and Amazon are the lead tech innovators and the market is very competitive. Wareable Utility is key “Women have used earrings for 7,000 years. We’ve just upgraded the experience” says Vlad Perianu, co-founder of Nova. If people are already putting on earrings every day why not make them utilitarian? The brand is marketing towards the utility of the product and unlike regular bluetooth headphones that need to be removed when they are not in use, the ultra sleep mode function allows for the wearer to keep the earrings on all day. When consumers purchase tech accessories they are usually in search of convenience and this is what Nova is capitalizing on. Companies such as Swing Hearables or LUXE bluetooth attempted to enter the tech earring market but unfortunately neither made it past the kickstarter phase. Swing Hearables really meant swing, as the headphone was actually built into the hanging part of the earring which could then be twisted and placed into the ear. LUXE bluetooth took a different approach by making fashionable ear cuffs that doubled as bluetooth. Although both approaches are innovative they were unable to make it to the market. Nova seems to have taken the most convenient approach with a design similar to the top selling wearable hearables. The support they received in their kickback says yes, but only time will tell.

You've launched your marketplace, it's gaining traction, but there's this nagging feeling in the back of your mind about your commission rates. Set in the early days of your startup, these rates were more of an educated guess than a calculated decision. Now, as you're steering through the complexities of marketplace dynamics, a question emerges – should you adjust your commission rates upwards? Imagine this: As a serial marketplace builder, I know that feeling. For the last 7 years, I have specialized in building marketplaces and digital products. In 2017, I became the co-founder & CTO of Radar, a driving schools marketplace in Eastern Europe, which was sold in 2020 to one of the local market leaders. From 2020 to 2023, I was also the Managing Director at itBoat, a global yachting marketplace with 10 years of history, 3x increased traffic, 10x increased partnership network and gained record-breaking sales through our platform. For many marketplace founders, the thought of increasing commissions represents a desirable change, but a really controversial one. On one hand, there's the undeniable need for financial sustainability; on the other, the fear of ruining the entire business model and relationships with partners. It's a dilemma that goes beyond just numbers; it goes into the core of value proposition, customer relationship, and your long-term strategy. In this series of articles, we're diving into the why's and how's of raising commission rates in your marketplace. In this article, we'll address the reasons to raise your commission and common fears associated with this process. And in the next article, we'll also look at a real-life case where doubling the commission paid off and exact strategies how to implement this change. So, whether you're contemplating this move or just curious about marketplace economics, let's unravel this together. Why Raise Commission Rate? When you first launched your marketplace, setting the commission rate probably felt like a shot in the dark. You wanted to be competitive, yet sustainable; attractive to users, yet profitable. But as any seasoned entrepreneur knows, the early days are about testing hypotheses, often with limited data on hand. Now, as your marketplace matures, it's time to revisit those early assumptions. Adjusting for Initial Estimates Early-stage marketplaces often set commission rates based on limited information. The rate you chose initially may have been a best guess under those circumstances. But as your platform evolves, so does your understanding of the market and your users' willingness to pay. Reassessing your commission structure with a wealth of data at hand means you can align your pricing more accurately with the value you provide. This isn't just about increasing profits; it's about ensuring your commission reflects the true worth of your services. That’s in my opinion the most important point here for early-stage marketplaces. Responding to Economic Changes The economic landscape is always changing, and a static pricing model may soon become outdated. Changes in market conditions, user expectations, and competitive environments necessitate a responsive approach to pricing. If your commission rates are frozen in time while everything else moves forward, you risk falling behind, both in terms of profitability and market relevance. Adapting your commission rates to the current economic reality is a crucial step in maintaining a healthy, thriving marketplace. Funding Platform Enhancements Higher commissions open up ways for reinvestment into your platform. This isn't just about padding the bottom line; it's about enhancing user experience, improving technology, and providing better services. Partners are more likely to accept a commission increase if they see tangible improvements in the platform – be it through more marketing features, more robust product features, or faster customer service. Preparing for Future Growth Finally, consider the long-term trajectory of your marketplace. As you scale, diversify, and tackle new challenges, you'll need a solid financial foundation. A well-thought-out commission increase can provide the necessary resources to fuel future growth, helping you to expand, innovate, and stay ahead of the curve in a competitive digital marketplace landscape. What if...? Addressing Fears Associated with Raising Commission Raising commission rates can be a nerve-wracking decision, primarily because of the potential impact on your sellers, who are the backbone of your marketplace. Let's address these fears and explore how to turn this challenge into an opportunity for strengthening partnerships. Fear of Losing Sellers The most immediate concern is the potential loss of sellers. They are, after all, your partners in business, and a hike in commission might initially seem off-putting. The key here is not just transparent communication about the increase, but also articulating the value they gain in return. Explain how the increased commission is reinvested into the marketplace to bring more buyers, enhance platform features, and ultimately boost their sales. When sellers understand that the increase is a move towards mutual growth, they are more likely to stay on board. The Dread of Initial Backlash Any significant change can provoke a strong reaction, and the fear of backlash from your current partners is valid. However, this can be mitigated with the right approach to communication. Set up meetings with your core partners to discuss these changes and gather feedback on the change. Be upfront and transparent about the reasons for the increase. More importantly, frame this change as an investment in the marketplace that benefits them directly. Highlight how this move will enable better services and a stronger platform, which in turn can lead to more business for them. In addition, this change presents an opportunity to deepen your relationship with your sellers. Engage in open dialogues, address their concerns, and gather their input. This not only helps in smoothing over any initial resistance but also makes your partnership more collaborative and productive. Sellers who feel heard and valued are more likely to be committed to your marketplace, even with a commission increase. Marketplaces are all about communication with your partners and users. Concerns Over Competitive Disadvantage With higher commissions, there's the worry that sellers might flock to competitors with lower fees. Counter this by highlighting what sets your marketplace apart. Emphasize the unique value you offer – whether it's a larger customer base, superior marketing support, or niche market access. Remember, it's not always about being the cheapest option; it’s about offering the best overall value. Your marketplace should strive to be indispensable by providing unmatched services and benefits that justify the commission. Transforming Challenge into Opportunity While the fear of a negative reaction is understandable, remember that this is also an opportunity to reinforce the value of your marketplace. A well-explained increase in commission, backed by visible improvements and benefits, can strengthen the trust and loyalty of your sellers. It's about reframing the narrative from a simple cost increase to a strategic move for collective progress and success. Why You Shouldn't Be Scared to Increase Your Marketplace Commission

, I found myself at the front door of a large suburban home in Redwood City, struggling to enter the correct key code. It was four in the afternoon —  the house was backlit by a golden Californian sun floating in a deep blue sky —  and I had a week’s worth of clothes and equipment in my backpack. Eventually, my friend Alena opened the door, saving me from further embarrassment. She’d been there an hour already, she explained, but everyone else was still in transit. On August 3rd, 2019 It was Day Zero of our Book Sprint, a writing marathon that had been in the works since earlier in the year when we first started kicking the idea around in Oslo. We had a shared interest in writing a non-technical Bitcoin book for “everyone else,” and given that we all had full-time professional commitments, it seemed like the only way it was ever going to happen was through some aggressive time-boxing. And so it was that the Book Sprint was born. We were going to write the darned thing in . four days The good news was that the house that they’d picked for this activity was pretty amazing, and between the apartment-sized kitchen, the gym, and the outdoor jacuzzi and pool, I saw no problem  at all in holing up for a few days. Eight Angry Bitcoiners By the evening, the entire team had arrived, and it was a lovely assemblage: I was from Manila, Alena Vranova from Prague, Timi Ajiboye from Lagos, Alejandro Machado from Medellin, Jimmy Song from Austin. (Alex Gladstein, Alex Lloyd, and Lily Liu were from the Bay Area, so they had slightly shorter commutes.) That night was the last time any one of us was going to be relaxed or cozy, as the days that followed were among the most intense I’d experienced since my TV production days in my early 20's. I was sharing a home with some of my favorite people in the Bitcoin community, but that wasn’t necessarily because we all thought alike. This was immediately evidenced by our conversations about who this book was meant for. Alex G wanted to write it for US millennials who read , I wanted to write it for Asian business-folks with healthy bank accounts. The only point of commonality was that it should be non-technical, and focus exclusively on the socio-economic aspects of Bitcoin that made it so revolutionary. The Economist Initially this intersect was best demonstrated by our working title, , which implied a far more intellectual treatise than what we eventually went with. After much debate, the title won out, although people’s comfort levels with it only normalized after we added the subtitle “Why Bitcoin Matters for Your Finances, Freedom, and Future.” I thought it was a great title, one that doesn’t assume any familiarity with the subject matter other than its name. It took two days to come to that conclusion though, and on hindsight, that was one of our easier negotiations. Why Bitcoin Matters The Little Bitcoin Book Over the next few days, we deliberated, argued, and cajoled at varying decibel levels — on everything from the proper capitalization of the word “bitcoin,” to how much space we should allocate for other cryptocurrencies, to the presence of the Oxford Comma, to whether or not the Bretton Woods agreement should be highlighted in our historical narrative. We were eight people from five different continents and cultures, and we were all used to being the smartest person in the room, as one of our house guests observed. There was no way it was all going to go smoothly. Here's what having eight opinionated editors working on the same document looks like Indeed, there were several moments where things felt fragile enough that I wasn’t sure we could move forward, but there, I believe the time constraints made a huge difference. With just a few days available, everyone was more willing to come to the table and talk it through. But —  spoiler alert — we finished it. I wanted to focus this article on the post-production aspects of how to actually usher the finished manuscript through the modern publication process and end up with a paperback delivered to your readers’ homes as quickly as possible. a great narrative of our writing process here The Publishing Dilemma It was evident from Day 1 that we were not going to be able to publish this book through traditional means. It simply didn’t make sense to spend a week writing a book, only to then wait a year for a publisher to pick it up. Granted, the traditional route does have its merits -- a book advance and marketing reach being the most significant. Ultimately we decided that there was enough “personal brand” energy between the eight of us to make up for the lack of formal channels, and profiting from a book advance was also not a huge motivating factor. The size of the potential readership was of utmost importance; everything else, less so. That left us with one path: . Amazon Jeff Bezos’ little startup has a lot going on for independent authors. Apart from commanding , it’s democratized print publication by making the entire process self-service. (Other contenders worth looking into: Lulu, IngramSpark.) nearly 50% of US print book sales This universality of access does bring with it some obvious drawbacks …  not the least of which is that if everyone can publish a book, just about anyone will. To wit: the self-published category on Amazon isn’t exactly replete with Ian McEwans or Michael Lewises. But the advantages were numerous and quite frankly, game-changing. We could have a perfect-bound, bookstore-quality paperback in our hands within just a few days, and readers could order their copies and have them shipped anywhere that Amazon infrastructure could reach. Mentioning the dates really emphasizes the point here: We all arrived at the house on August 3rd, and . Just two weekends later, on the , retail copies of the print book were delivered to Jimmy’s house in Austin. By the next day, copies were in transit to the Czech Republic, Nigeria, and the Philippines. officially kicked off the Book Sprint on August 4th, Sunday 18th of August If that kind of time-to-market doesn’t make you think twice about waiting for that Penguin Books call-back, I don’t know what will. We went from conceptualization to global distribution in 14 days. Just Do It Yourself! Amazon’s (KDP) platform provides authors with most of the tools they’d need to bring a manuscript to life as both a Kindle ebook and as a paperback. There’s a Cover Creator, a DOCX converter, and even a free ISBN. They all seemed like good starting points, although we instead opted to design and build everything ourselves. Kindle Direct Publishing KDP supports over , and we went with the smallest one possible, 5" by 8". We were called after all. There’s extensive documentation on how to , and it should be pretty familiar to anyone who has ever worked in desktop publishing. I used Adobe InDesign to build the interior pages, Procreate to hand-draw the interior illustrations, and Adobe Photoshop to design the wraparound book cover. a dozen paperback types and sizes The Little Bitcoin Book make your document print-ready The skeuomorphic cover design used familiar and tangible elements (leather stitching, satin fabric, note paper) to introduce something unfamiliar and intangible (Bitcoin). The team used Google Docs as our primary writing platform, so everyone could see changes in real-time. Google Docs has a very simple styling system: everything that isn’t “normal” body text is either a , a , or one of a series of s. Title Subtitle Heading It doesn’t actually matter what those styles look like within your Google document; what does matter is that when you export it as DOCX, those style names are retained. That means that when you import the DOCX file into your Adobe InDesign layout, you can hook on to those same style names and override them with your final book formatting, as long as you use similar names in your definitions. This is a tremendous time-saver and saves the book designer having to hand-select and restyle each element every time a new draft of the book is imported. Paragraph Styles It was a pretty familiar workflow, as I’d used a similar process when I . The manuscript of about 22,000 words came out to just over 110 pages when fully styled, and by August 10th, we had a print-ready PDF waiting for approval on KDP. published in 2017 Reinventing Remittances with Bitcoin The Problem with Ebooks Ironically, I struggled with the Kindle ebook production process. I couldn’t find any reliable tools to automate the workflow in the same way as InDesign. I experimented with a Kindle plugin for Microsoft Word, which allowed me to take our Google Doc and produce a Kindle-compatible ebook in seconds. Unfortunately, the output left a lot to be desired. There were plenty of styling problems — the Word format has a bad habit of hiding a lot of dross that only shows up when you try to convert into a different format — and when I tried previewing it on the Kindle Previewer app, it didn’t actually match what the end-users were seeing on their devices. I also tried the official Kindle Create app, which didn’t give me more control but did allow me to pick from a couple of handy themes that styled our book globally with one click. Again, styling and text-encoding issues were everywhere, and we couldn’t seem to get output that matched what the Kindle Previewer was showing us. Finally, I decided to just hand-code the whole thing in HTML and CSS, which is really all that an eBook is, anyway. The EPub format is actually just a ZIP archive containing HTML, XML, CSS, and image files, and you can unpack any EPub file by just changing its file extension to . zip Google Docs can export directly into both HTML or EPUB formats, but I found neither output to be particularly satisfying, as both had the same massive code chaff that would make maintenance and future updates really challenging. I reasoned that with a far simpler, hand-made codebase to work off of, there would be fewer rendering issues and styling inconsistencies. In order to accomplish this, I had to first export our Google Doc into Markdown (there are a number of plugins for this), which gets rid of everything that isn’t directly related to the text. What you end up with is a thoroughly cleaned manuscript that still has the essentials like headings, emphasis, and links, but no styling information and no metadata. I found a great tutorial for , and spent an evening rebuilding our book in HTML based on the generated Markdown text. Having access to the full power of CSS also allowed me to apply a consistent global style across the entire document. Essentially, I was repeating the work I had just done from within the GUI of Adobe InDesign, except using code … but this was still loads better than trusting either Kindle Create or some other third-party app. (Or so I repeated to myself as I questioned why I was going through all this trouble.) how to setup your EPUB files here After I had resurfaced, I had an HTML project with over 24,000 words in it. I uploaded the whole thing to a Github repository so I could share the extent of my mental disorder with my co-authors. Extenuating Circumstances As is typical with run-and-gun processes like our Book Sprint, delays were caused by externalities more than anything else. We went through a number of last-minute changes during our second week, refining some sections, or integrating errata in others, and Amazon takes 24–48 hours to review each new version. I think we lost about 4 days in aggregate just waiting for Amazon’s QA team to get back to us, and unfortunately there’s no way around this. (Other than to just get it right the first time, of course.) Once the print book is approved and “live,” it can be ordered and shipped within a few days to any of the Amazon country hubs. Countries like the Philippines or Nigeria are obviously a bit further out, so shipping a large batch can take as long as 10 days. Given that our book is less than a month old, this seemed like a very reasonable waiting time. Future Optimizations (or, How to Publish a Sequel?) With exactly one Book Sprint under our collective belts, it’s probably not reasonable for me to pontificate on the exact recipe that will work for other teams. But I do have some thoughts on how I would approach it if we were to do this again. A handful of our production delays were due to the fact that we were still receiving third-party edits while we were building the print and ebook editions. Having an editor reviewing the work during the Book Sprint itself would have helped streamline the output considerably and kept the voices consistent. Have a professional editor on your team. Because each author was working on their own chapters or sections independently, bringing it all together caused a lot of clashing formatting that needed to be manually adjusted. I’m not sure what Markdown-powered app I would use for collaborative writing (perhaps Notion?) but I believe the extremely restrictive formatting capabilities of Markdown would go a long way towards making our text-merges a lot less painful. Enforce formatting guidelines, or use Markdown. Seeing as this was our very first attempt, it’s obvious that we didn’t know what we didn’t know. Other than the chapter breakdowns during Day Zero, I would also probably include an hour of discussion around certain fundamentals. Some are mechanical, like , or establishing the proper capitalization of the word “bitcoin.” Others are tactical: how do we deal with narratives featuring our own brands, or brands of our direct competitors? How do we tackle issues around other cryptocurrencies? Do we even want to mention them? Still others are high-level and strategic: is the book an objective resource or an opinionated one? Do we want people to buy Bitcoin as a result of reading this book, and if so, how is it not construed as investment advice? All of these questions were answered as we were writing and editing, and on hindsight, could have been identified much earlier on in the process. Publishing The Little Bitcoin Book: From Conceptualization to Global Distribution in 14 Days

About a year ago, I was talking to someone about how difficult it was to get myself to write. I had been working on a for O’Reilly and Associates for about 9 months at that point and had talked to other authors who acknowledged the same problem. Many authors find that books take a long time to write with 2 years being the norm. The 14 months that I took for my book was relatively fast, according to my editors. book Why is book writing so slow? It occurred to me that there must be a better way. After all, I’m a programmer and I’ve done crazier, more daunting tasks in a much shorter amount of time . What was different? Why was writing a book, or more specifically, getting into a flow to write so hard? The problem was motivation. It’s easy to get stuck in a pit of despair with a large hill to climb. In the situations where I was most in the flow, the main motivators were a clear purpose, a clear goal, and most importantly, other people depending on me. Could a book be written the same way an application is prototyped? That is, quickly and iteratively as in a design or coding sprint? Could you really write a book in a week or less? I became obsessed with the book sprint idea and I started mentioning it to some friends. I found that the coordination to create the right environment is pretty difficult given that everyone has obligations. The book sprint idea would have to wait to be paired with the right project that would be worthy of such coordination. The Project The project was not something I had expected to get involved in. I’ve been a programmer for a long time and though I care about human rights, it’s not something I’ve been actively involved in during my 20+ year career. Everything changed when I met . He invited me to have dinner with some folks from the who had a real use for Bitcoin, the subject of the book I had just written. It turns out that Bitcoin is helping lots of people in distressed places with authoritarian regimes. I learned a lot about what they were doing and we promised to keep in touch. Alex Gladstein Human Rights Foundation Alex called me a short while later asking me if I would review a book idea he and a co-author had. The idea was how Bitcoin was changing society, especially in the realm of human rights. This would necessarily require some description of Bitcoin and why a government couldn’t control it, so they wanted my review. Bringing Together a Book Sprint They wanted to pitch me on the idea, but I wanted to pitch them on book sprinting to see how well it could work. You would think most people would tell me I’m crazy to think that a book can be written so fast, but reactions are consistently the opposite. Most people think right away that writing a book in a week is possible. This is likely because we’ve all done herculean tasks in a short amount of time. Maybe you were in a group project in college or managed to recreate the whole application in a crazy week before release at a startup. We’ve all done something superhuman with a group of people over a short amount of time. These are often some of our best memories and proudest moments. In the end, we were enthused about book sprinting this project and we decided to gather some more people. After some discussion about who would be good for the project, we ended up with 8 people for a 4-day sprint in August. We weren’t sure at all if that would be enough time, but we decided to give it a go. The Setup We managed to get a place where we could all sleep, eat and work in early August. We wanted to be free from distractions to just work on the book. We had plenty of coffee, a good amount of food and lots of post-it notes and pens. We even had a gym, swimming pool, and a nice kitchen to cook our food. We all brought our laptops, had a lot of places to discuss one-on-one, other places to work quietly and still other places to discuss everything in a group setting. We made liberal use of food delivery services and relaxed every evening. Figuring Out What to Write Taking a lead from  design and code sprint principles, we started by getting into the mind of our target audience. We did an exercise where we each described the audience we had in mind. We wanted a good idea of where they would be at before reading the book, so we did a little role play to get into character. We asked our hypothetical audience member what they knew about Bitcoin, what their impressions about it were and what their biggest questions were. We also wrote down what their reviews would be after reading our book. These served later as something like acceptance tests for our book. Everything we would write later had to be evaluated on whether it would help readers get to the review we wanted. Now that we knew where our audience was before and after the book, it gave us a good idea what knowledge the reader lacked. We then listed everything possible that could help the reader get from point A to point B on separate post-it notes. We then put them on the wall and started organizing them together. Organizing We gathered at the sticky-filled wall and started to organize the ideas into groups. There were some obvious categories to write about, but some seemed to be completely out on their own. After an hour or so, we managed to group them and label what would become our chapters. We put the chapter titles on bigger post-it notes and started discussing what the table of contents would look like. What sort of flow through these topics would help the readers? How could we get the reviews we wanted? What started as ten chapters were combined and shrunk to six chapters in an order that was both engaging and clear. At this point we were at the end of Day One, but we felt really good about where we were. We knew what topics we needed to write about (chapters), and topics each chapter needed to cover (post it notes in each chapter). The only thing left were the actual words. Writing The next two days went surprisingly fast. We assigned first drafts and kept a record of who reviewed what chapter on a whiteboard so everyone could see. Everyone wrote, re-wrote, edited, re-edited and every chapter was seen by everyone. The only rule was that when you got to the chapter, you could edit, add or delete anything. The mentality that we had was one of group ownership. This or that section wasn’t any one person’s it was all of ours. We checked in every 3–6 hours, ate together, hosted some guests who dropped by and slept when we could. There’s something to be said about working in close proximity to one another in this environment. Whenever anyone got stuck, they asked for clarification or asked others for thoughts on the topic. There really wasn’t any room for writer’s block as we knew that everyone else was depending on us. The first drafts of each chapter were completed in about 6 hours. Each round after that took about 3 hours each. Everyone added their own perspectives in each round of edits. Sometimes whole sections would be added. Other times, there would be illustrations or stories here and there, and still others improving the style. At the end of the Day Three, we had a manuscript with the content but not quite the voice we wanted. Still, we sent the book out for review by trusted friends who fit the audience profile. In the meantime we started to make the voice in the book consistent. We found that the book worked better by rearranging the longest chapter into a Q&A section at the end of the book. Review The last day was spent on a lot of copy-editing. Asking questions such as: Is this concept clear to someone that doesn’t know anything about Bitcoin? Did we mention this concept yet by this time in the text? What other illustrations do we need? The review process is where we found that we had some conflicts. Should we include this section or that? How much detail does this particular section need? There was a lot of disagreement and hence a lot of talking through what we needed to change. It’s easy to see why. There was a lot of effort that sometimes got deleted and it’s easy to feel slighted. In the end, we reviewed the whole book, rewrote certain parts and uploaded the laid out book to Amazon which can be seen . here Conclusion I can say with confidence that book sprinting is very different than traditional book writing. There was a lot more energy, creativity, and excitement in sprinting instead of the slog, dread and boredom of the normal process. Of course, there was also more conflict, discussion and throwing away, but overall, the trade-off was totally worth it. I was shocked at the quality of what we could achieve in such a short time. I’m very proud of how turned out and I am sure my co-authors would say the same. This might be a good time to mention them by name: , , , , , , and . A lot of passages needed fleshing out and others needed tightening up. Trying to make the voice a little more consistent from the beginning would have helped a lot. As you might have guessed from the title, I'm Kseniia Ivanova, the mastermind and founder of InSoul Effects, a boutique VFX studio. Our passion lies in creating magic for movies and series in our company. We've been fortunate to work on some fantastic projects, Pennyworth, Santo, Shattered, and Under the Banner of Heaven. Why did you choose this field in the first place? Thanks to my family, I was exposed in books, movies, and music. I loved using my imagination to create stories. Chess, violin, and art classes helped me develop critical thinking skills and an eye for aesthetics. I also developed a passion for computer games and programming, eventually leading to a visual effects career (VFX). While studying filmmaking at university, I realized that my love for movies and my programming skills could be combined in the field of VFX. Along the way, I discovered Cinefex, a magazine that covered VFX in films and proved to be a valuable resource for me. Nevertheless, breaking into the industry was challenging, as there was no information about creating computer graphics in my native language. What tech are you most excited/passionate about right now and why? In the VFX field, artificial intelligence has long been a hot issue. I love the concept that you can automate boring stuff since I am all up to that! So, we are exploring all possible solutions for implementing this technology into our ecosystem. Another exciting topic is real time rendering. As a vivid example, Pixar’s Toy Story movie utilized 800,000 machine hours and 114,240 animation frames across 1,561 shots, lasting around 77 minutes. Interestingly, some sources claimed that Pixar renders less than 30 seconds per day which is hard to believe! Today, producer Jonas Rivara claims that if they had to render “Toy Story,” they would take so little time that you could watch the entire movie in one sitting. What are you most worried about right now and why? ChatGPT remains one of the significant concerns for me as people spend more time chatting with this artificial intelligence technology on their mobile devices than speaking with real people in the physical world. Of course, this technology is well-trained and creates a grand illusion of you being right and being heard. However, I notice that more and more people prefer chatting with the ML tool, escaping the reality of today’s world. The more advanced the technology, the more lonely and isolated people may become. What are your hobbies and interests outside of tech? My childhood affinity for literature and television series continues to this day. I enjoy reading, whether it is classic, non-fiction, or poetry. I also love to write mostly short but several times I've written some screenplays.  Who knows, maybe one day it could come to life at InSoul Effects. Let's talk about breaking the glass ceiling. What were the biggest challenges you faced as a woman in tech, and how did you deal with them? Throughout my career, I've seen some unpleasant and unequal attitudes toward women in the tech industry. But I've also seen progress over the years, and I'm hopeful it will continue. Regarding my work, I focus on finding clients, colleagues, and partners who prioritize professionalism and experience and share my values. And if a workplace doesn't feel right, I have no problem moving on. As for me, finding ourselves in a male-dominated industry that does not want to acknowledge the leadership role of women, earning respect has been a struggle. Recognizing business communication styles of each gender helped me better understand our colleagues and get the most out of our working relationships, creating a win-win for all. Sometimes I have to act more aggressive and unyielding - and often just for show rather than for the cause. In some places, people wouldn’t expect to see me as a CEO — thinking that I’m simply a secretary or coordinator of the project. Despite progress, women still face significant disparities in representation, pay, and opportunities compared to their male counterparts. We must address these disparities' root causes to change the status quo. This means tackling implicit bias, providing equal opportunities for education and training, fostering inclusive workplace cultures, and implementing fair hiring and promotion practices. Any questionable misogynistic story/situation you faced/handled and you want to share with the HackerNoon Fam? As an intern, the studio's boss told me I would never succeed as a VFX artist. A few years later, I  disproved his assertion. There was also another situation, when a studio owner informed me at a Christmas party that there were no excellent female artists in the world and that he didn't believe one could exist. I really doubt we ever cross paths since they are still stuck in the same market they were 10 years ago.  And one valuable lesson I learned from these experiences is not to take it personally and waste time on toxic people. What was your biggest setback/failure, and how did you manage it? I was surrounded by people that needed my support and aid throughout my career to accomplish their objectives. This has led me to take on risky projects - other people were scared enough to take full responsibility for them. Despite the risks involved, I successfully delivered each project, which helped shape my mindset before co-founding InSoul Effect, a VFX company, with my business partner. It never scared me to accomplish impossible tasks, and I prefer to do them over simple projects as they are more exciting and entertaining. Yet, one of my most challenging setbacks was the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. As a Russian citizen, navigating society has become increasingly complex, leading to numerous roadblocks in our career and business lives. I cannot change my passport, but this situation has revealed those who are professional enough to separate a country from a person. Despite these challenges, there is still a substantial demand for our services. What's your most significant achievement that you're really proud of? A turning point in my career came when I was offered to work on Game of Thrones in Australia. I was 23, and my career was starting. After taking this job, everything appeared more straightforward and doable, and I was confident that nothing was impossible. Therefore, never question your abilities, even if your dream feels too challenging. Once you overcome those obstacles, you realize you can achieve anything. Who is your tech idol? Why? How do you or your company intend to embrace the responsibility of this title in 2022? In 2022 we offered ourselves a very important mission - to help the youngest creators to learn about their authorship and intellectual property rights. And I want to share with you a short story behind it. Please have a look at the picture on the cover - from the one side, it’s a painting made by a 9-year-old girl, but from another side, it’s the unique digital asset existing only in Blockchain because the original painting was probably lost or destroyed in the art school. I met Sasha Ch., a 9-year-old daughter of my best friend, and she was upset because the art school where she studied took her artwork “A Learned cat” and never returned it back. “I would like to get a Learned Cat back, but the art school doesn't return it to me for too long time”, - says an author, 9-year-old Sasha Ch. from Russia. - “looks like it has been lost, or, . It’s a pity, I liked this piece and my family too. My idea was to interpret a female scientific cat. Cool to have a photo though, even if it's not the same”. if it was recognized like lack of artistic value, it will be reused by other students as a pallet to mix colors I was completely shocked. For example, in Latin America, from where Sharp Shark is, in every school my daughter got back ALL her creations, with or without artistic value. Every last scribble was returned to her! The concept behind that is that only the creator can decide what to do with her or his works. How is it possible that in some art schools happen things like that  when any work can be: lost; thrown away; recycled for pallets for other students; destroyed; disappeared; whatever else. And everybody thinks it’s normal just because it’s always been like that! I mean, how can young creators be inspired and motivated when they can't see the progress they made during the years of studying? Why would anyone else make decisions about something that is not of their own making?
